  17. <p>The Cincinnati Reds owner is suspended for alleged racial slurs
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Pick your baseball metaphor: Major League baseball owners could
  20. have benched Marge Schott, called strike three, hit her with a
  21. pitch. Instead they balked, bunted, let her off easy. Charges
  22. that the Cincinnati Reds owner used such phrases as "dumb lazy
  23. nigger" and "dirty Jews" led the owners' executive council to
  24. fine her $25,000 and give her a one-year suspension starting
  25. March 1. Schott is a millionaire, so the fine is just lunch
  26. money; if she behaves herself and attends "multicultural
  27. training programs," she can return to baseball by Nov. 1--more
  28. of a seventh-inning stretch than a suspension. Schott won't be
  29. allowed in the owner's box to watch the Reds, but she can sit
  30. in an executive suite. She'll stay involved in major decisions,
  31. and gets to pick someone to control the team's day-to-day
  32. operations in her absence. Ironically, Schott may end up making
  33. other owners look bad in contrast. Recently she hired a Hispanic
  34. manager, one of just six minority managers in the majors.
